- A quick look atย whether todayโs most crucialย societal issuesย wereย addressedย duringย the 2021 Goldenย Globesย
- Brands and organizationsย can learn from Hollywoodโsย mistakesย
On March 1,ย Amy Poehler and Tina Feyย hostedย the 78th Golden Globe Awardsย andย thousands of viewers watchedย the ceremonyย from home. This year, though, just like everything else, things are different.ย
Besides the fact that the ceremonyย wasย heldย virtuallyย โ the audienceย hadย expectationsย that might have been different than years before.ย Thingsย that have been especially important inย a social climate that is still very much sensitive.ย
So,ย isย Hollywoodย still glorifyingย the elite bubble?ย Is Hollywoodย white, straight and male as ever?ย Letโsย find out. And where is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association when it comes to the current Zeitgeist?ย
Race:ย Wrongย
HFPAโs lack of diverseโฏrepresentationย is significant.ย The organization has been called out left,ย right, and centerย since theย Golden Globes by numerous actors and organizations.ย
In fact,ย HFPAโs lack of Blackย votingย members becameย a wave of industry criticism and an entireย controversyย of the 2021 Golden Globes ceremony.ย
At the beginning ofย theย Globes weekend, the #TimesUp organization issued its statement, calling on the HFPAย to go beyond a โcosmetic fixโ withย the following message on socialย media:ย
โHollywood Foreign Press Association. Not a single Black member out ofย theย 87ย members. A cosmetic fix isnโt enough #TimesUpGlobes.โย
Amy Schumer, Spike Lee, Jennifer Aniston, Mark Ruffalo, and so many more Hollywood stars have been supporting that.ย

In response, a 43-second telecast during the ceremonyย showed HFPA leaders pledge to diversifyย theirย ranks.ย
โTonight, while we celebrate the work of artists from around the globe, we recognize we have our own work to do,โ said Helenย Hoehne, the HFPAโs vice president. โJust like in film and television, representation is vital. We must have Black journalists in our organization.โย

Whileย former president of the organization,ย Meherย Tatna, added that the HFPA โmust also ensure everyone from all underrepresented communities gets a seat at our table, and we are going to make that happen.โย
Therefore,ย itโsย crucial that the HFPA addresses the systemic problems within their organization.ย ย
And, if your brandย hasnโtย done so already, nowโs the time to put in the rigorous effort andย work to implement a plan, too.ย
Gender Equality:ย Rightย
Women breaking barriers in all aspects of lifeย paveย the way for future generations.ย This year, the Golden Globesย nominations inspired women from across the globeย as well โย right in time forย Womenโs History Month.ย

Some would call thisย aย double standard for how men and women should dress toย one of the worldโs mostย fashionable eventsย thatย normally starts on the red carpet.ย
But overall, it seems like at this aspect, at least, HFPAโs main event cameย acrossย as โwokeโ.ย
